OUR STORY
The new Aboukir High School evolved from Aboukir High School & Institute formerly known as Aboukir High School & Educational Institute. The former institution was founded by Mr. Moses Mayne and Dr. Neville Gallimore in 1968.
In the early years it was exclusively funded by donations from the Inter-American Improvement Association Inc. Kaiser Bauxite company and succeeding companies have done many favours to the former institution over the years, under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. In 2005 the Ministry of Education began placing students who sat the Grade Nine Achievement Test (GNAT) and in 2006, it began providing grant funding for the former institution.
Over the years, students’ passes in the Caribbean Secondary Examinations Certificate (CSEC) have been comparable to traditional high schools in Jamaica. Graduates of the former institution can be found in nearly all of the recognized professions in Jamaica and abroad.
Numerous requests have been made for the Government of Jamaica to assume full control of the school. However, it was not until June 2021 that a decision was taken to transition the institution into a fully owned and operated government high school.
The new Aboukir High School will build on its legacy and will seek to soar to new heights in producing students who will be leaders, creative and critical thinkers, problem solvers, trail blazers and trend setters; ready to take their places as productive global citizens.
